What is the OVA!

OVA stands for Ontario Volleyball Association, it was put together in 1928.  OVA is run by the government and provides a organized structure for the sport of Volleyball in the Province of Ontario.  The OVa runs programs for all ages and levels for both indoor and beach volleyball.  They also provide all Ontario residents with fair and equal access to participate by having recreation, competitive, elite, instructional, administrative, coaching and officiating programs.

All the OVA programs and volunteer activities are funded and supported by Ontario  Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation, membership fees, user fees, interested corporate sponsors and fund raising activities.

Membership:
Ontario Volleyball consists of a membership in excess of 15,000 Ontario residents. Membership is open to all persons interested in the sport of volleyball. There are five levels of membership:

full members
recreational members
beach members
associate members
affiliate members

Clubs:
The bulk of the OVA's membership lies in the more than 110 clubs that operate volleyball programs across the province. These clubs vary in size and offer different levels of play from Bantam (under 14) to the top level Division 1 adult teams. For information on starting a club in your area, contact the OVA office ([email protected]) and ask for the free booklet, How To Start a Volleyball Club.

Official Levels

The Ova has clinic that certify and recognize players to qualify for indoor officials. There are six levels of indoor certification:
Novice
Local
Regional
Provincial
National
International

The level of certification determines the category of competition the official is eligible to officiate: Elementary school, High school, Recreational leagues, OVA tournaments, Provincial Championships, College, University, National Championships.

In order to upgrade you must go to a clinic and successfully complete the test and then you will get the upgrade in your certificate.

Equipment
You don't need much to play volleyball,  all you need is shorts or track pants and tee-shirt to play.
Volleyballs and nets are usually provided at the recreational centers or where ever u are playing but if you are thinking of buying your own, then for volleyballs you can buy them at any sport stores for about $20. For nets that is a little hard you would have to look for a store that specializes in volleyball stuff or you can go to stores like National sports and buy them for about $130(not including poles).  Another thing that you might want are knee pads they are not needed but you might want them to protect your knees from sliding on the indoor floors.  Knees pads are usually about $20 at most and you can buy them at any sport stores.
